Bengali Language and Cultural School (BLCS)
A non-profit, non-political and non-religious organisation
Bengali Language and Cultural School (BLCS) is a non-profit, nonpolitical and non-religious organisation. It was established in 1984 to meet the demands of the growing Bengali speaking populations well as to enhance the Bengali culture among the young generation in Victoria. The school is a member of the Ethnic Schools Associations.
In 2002, the school moved to its current location at the Westall Secondary College. The school runs on Sundays during Victorian school terms, for 2.5 hrs from 2.30 P.M to 5.00 P.M.
School is subsidized, mainly by the Department of Education and Training (DE&T), the Government of Victoria with some contribution from parents and members.
Apart from teaching Bengali Language, the school organizes different Bengali cultural events such as Ekushey February, Bangladesh Independence day, Pohela Boishak/Bengali New Year etc. The school also organises few other annual events such as Parents Teachers get-together, Annual Cultural Function, Sports and BBQ etc. The school oragnizes study tours on occasional basis.
The school’s objectives includes but not limited to the following:
- To teach Bengali language to students from Bengali
communities of all origins and background, and from all
interested members of other communities in Australia at
the primary level.
- To provide basic training in Bengali music and culture.
- To observe and celebrate days relevant to Bengali language
- To organize seminars, workshops and cultural activities to
introduce and po pularise Bengali language and culture to
the people outside the Bengali community.
- To publish newsletter, pamphlets and bulletins.
- To adopt any other activities which appear suitable to
advance Bengali language and culture in Australia.

A management committee with 10 members runs the School and the school is assisted by three teachers.

Dr Nawshad Haque is the current elected President of the school for 2016.
The school is based on the principles to teach the students of Bengali and other interested communities. In order to attain this- a curriculum in Bengali language has been modulated following Languages Other Than English (LOTE) curriculum standards.
Since its inception Bengali Language and Cultural School (BLCS) has demonstrated a transparent and stronger evidence of building community relationships and community.
